Club October trip to Grasmere in the Lake District

The selected destination for the October outing of the East Kilbride Mountaineering Club was the village of Grasmere in the Lake District representing our annual invasion into the territory of the Auld Enemy. Our Routemeister, Dick had posted eight suggested routes on our website ranging from a double mountain climb of Helvellyn at 949 metres and Fairfield at 873 metres to one of the easier routes to Easdale Tarn and return. Typical of his description of routes was “Start at the Swan Inn and walk into the village where you take the path beside the Gingerbread Shop”. A seven o clock start in East Kilbride on a wet Sunday morning seen about forty five souls safely seated on the bus and en route. It was good to see that the non geriatric members were in the majority and the ladies were well represented to the extent of almost fifty percent of the busload. On arrival at Grasmere the weather was dry but this only lasted about one hour before the rain started and continued on and off for the rest of the day. Despite the poor weather conditions Helvellyn was tackled with disappointing views of the inside of a cloud from the summit. The only point of interest is a memorial stone to a Charles Gough found dead from a fall from rocks at that place in 1805. It was reported that his dog was found on the spot guarding his skeleton.  Two of our party had decided on a three pitch rock climb on Shepherds Crag south of Derwent Water. Their comments on returning safely to the bus were, that on the day, sub aqua gear may have been more appropriate than normal safety harness, helmets etc. A five o clock departure from Grasmere gave us time for a short half hour break for food and other refreshments at Lockerbie and a return to East Kilbride before nine o clock. Our next indoor meeting is on Wednesday 2nd November in the British Legion Hall in the Village when you can book your place on the bus to Glen Lochy on the following Sunday 6th November. Your attention is drawn to two dates for your next year diary namely our Burns Supper on 18th January and our Ceilidh on the 16th March 2012. Other information can be found on our website www.eastkilbridemountaineeringclub.co.uk
