CLUB REPORTS

Club weekend at Mill Cottage, December 2008

A motley crew assembled on Friday 19th for the now legendary EKMC Xmas meeting. Due to building works overrunning, this year's meet was held at Mill Cottage near Feshie Bridge and was shared by a couple of hardy souls from Sheffield who braved the full force of our hospitality! A special mention at this stage is given to Nic, who, due to manflu, did an uncanny impression of Rudolph, this was to be bettered by his impression of snoozy from the 7 dwarfs the next night!!

Numbers dictated that 8 people endured the hardship of peace & quiet and cool fresh air under canvas while those lucky enough to have secured an indoor billet shared in the pleasures of community snoring, body heat and a smoldering fireplace all night long.

Saturday was a glorious day with frost to be scraped off cars before we could venture out. Alison, Janet & David went to Mullach Clach a Bhlair while several groups set off to wear down Meall a Bhuachaille a wee bit more. High level conditions were clear but very cold due to a high wind and icy on the higher slopes.

The Saturday evening saw Isabel in charge of proceedings in the kitchen and ably assisted by Marion, produced a full xmas dinner. Thanks go to Sid & Avril for clearing out most of Norfolk's finest with the largest amount of turkey ever presented in 1 sitting. 1sts were had by all then 2nds and then some had 3rds! An interval was declared while some of the menfolk re-enacted the highland clearances and washed, dried and put away anything that wasn't moving. We then went on to the obligatory flaming pudding, brandy butter and custard accompaniments, with sherry trifle and choccy sponge for those of a weaker constitution. A round of coffee and mints was prepared as we retired to the lounge after our feast.

Santa, reluctantly, it would appear after a momentary short term memory loss, remembered he had duties to perform and eventually made a much appreciated appearance to give gifts to all the good boys and girls. He certainly enjoyed giving the girls theirs! Soon the room was filled with joy as presents were opened, Marion entertained with her penny whistle and then handed over to our guest John who played us wee tunes and sang a few songs from his homeland of NRN IRLN. Alison was in fine voice too with some wonderful singing.

The community singing of wild rover(at least we know that one right through!) gave way to some competitive games in tin can ally - this only being brought to an end by the leaping frogs!!

Alison produced the Port and the potential for a whole new xmas party tradition emerged. Stilton will be on the menu next year and gentlemen will be required to wear smoking jackets and retire to the lounge to smoke cigars.
