CLUB REPORTS
Attadale again
Jan Kilpatrick once again arranged (with the help of Donald and his
computer) a week away for a group of us senior members of the club. After
a very successful trip to Cannich last year it was decided to return to
the Attadale estate near Loch Carron. Jan must have some very powerful
friends, for the third year running we had absolutely super weather.
On
the Sunday we all walked in from Craig, with the exception of Charlie
who is still recovering from his recent operation, to the river crossing
for the Bhearnais bothy path. Jan and Phil accompanied by Donald went
on to the bealach, the rest of us eventually returned to Craig but Donald
who had not been feeling well decided to turn back at the bealach. Jan
and Phil then climbed Sgurr Choinnich and Sgurr a Chaorachain and had
a hard time of it coming down a very steep descent, followed by a five
mile walkout. Welcome relief when met by Donald and Charlie bearing gifts
of chilled beer. An easy walk round the gardens at Balnacara followed
by lunch at the fish restaurant in Plockton on Monday.
Tuesday saw seven of us complete the Coulin path, a 16 kilometre round
trip, starting from Achnashellach station. Charlie again had to sit this
one out. Really warm and sunny all day. We all drove to Applecross on
the Wednesday and had a great lunch at the Applecross inn. Wonderful
views across to Torridon on the way back to Sheildaig where we stopped
for coffee.
Two
years ago we had got permission to drive seven miles into the Attadale
estate to climb Bidein a Choire Sheasgaich and Lurg Mhor. Two very
remote and difficult to get at hills. The question was would we manage
to get permission to drive into the Achnashellach estate from Craig to
complete the six miles to Glenuaig Lodge and the climb Maoil Lunndaidh.
The long walk in (and out) would have been too much for most but particularly
Winnie who has such trouble with her knees. After a series of phone calls
and meetings Jan finally managed to speak to the head stalker and he agreed
to let us drive in the six miles on the Friday. Spared the demands of
the long walk in Winnie decided in spite of her knee problems, she would
come along. So five of us Jan, Phil, Donald, Winnie and myself ,numbers
being limited by car space, climbed Maoile Lunndaidh on an absolutely
splendid day. The views from the top were stunning in every direction.
Each evening back at the cottage Margaret, Lesley Winnie, and Jan
took turns to prepare a feast of food - and boy did they! What better
way to relax of an evening after a hard day on the hill but with good friends
in front of a roaring log fire and with that glass of cheer in hand. Ideal!
