CLUB REPORTSDriven up the wall - 2005Big Stewart suggested we have a training evening down at the Glagow Climbing Centre. There were a few takers all arriving around 8.00pm, to get some instruction from Stewart in the art of belaying and climbing, and some pointers to a safe and sound enjoyment of the sport. It appeared that Angela did not believe that Donald had been paying attention because every time her Sam went up the wall she said to me, of Donald belaying Sam, "is he doing that right for ma Sam, is he safe?" By the end of the evening most people had discovered finger and forearm muscles that may never have been used before! A few shots at belaying and climbing were tried by all and particular promise was shown by Donald McKenzie and Hazel Miller who scurried up and down the wall like real pros! New member Ann was most impressed at the whole set up and soon could not be stopped from looking for every overhang and pinch grip to conquer! Mention has to be made for two of the clubs established rock jocks - Richard Gilligan and Alistair "the cat" Murphy who were jumping up the climbs, hanging by one arm, and challenging Stuart to harder and harder moves all evening. The night was a great success and the centre has come on a great deal since myself (DJ) and Roger used to go. I hope we can make it a more regular feature for the club. Anyone else interested please give Stewart a shout for more information about the centre and its activities.
Lake District busrunArmed with a poor forecast various groups set off to places like Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield, Grisedale Tarn, High Street and Place Fell. The weather closed in during the day "as expected" and we all got a bit of a soaking. Special mention to the Mark Tracey team that endured hail stones the size of golf balls and hurricane force winds.
Janet, Angela and Sam with "associate" members Mark & Fiona, enjoying the views from Fairfield.
