CLUB REPORTS

Newtonmore Bunkhouse - November 2006

Driving up in blizzards, rain, sleet and snow did not bode well for the weekend. Sam, Angela, Janet, David, John, Allison, Andy and Bob assembled on Friday evening, a fire was set and some of the athletes started making plans for the following day - David drank some wine.

Don't trust the weatherman!
The mountain forecast was for winds gusting 60-70 miles/hour and weather generally poor so when we woke up to a still and frosty morning, scraping ice off the car, we were surprised to say the least. All eight of us set off for Carn an Freiceadain behind the golf course in Kingussie.

starting the dayWe followed the road track into the estate and as soon as we gained height we hit the deep soft snow. The last time I climbed this hill with brother Tom it was in deep soft snow and a whiteout, but this time it was with a blue sky and a light breeze. We waded up the track onto the 1st subsidiary summit Beinn Bhreac, before crossing the undulating plateau to the summit cairn. The cairngorms were clear and covered by 2-3 feet of fresh snow and the views all around were stunning. The problem however is that walking downhill in deep snow is every bit as hard as going up. (Comment from webmaster - David did a grand job breaking trail for us!)

As we descended we saw a mountain hare running towards us. It stopped incredibly near us to pose for photos.

That night Angela conducted a favourite song contest and with some tactical voting she came last and Sam 2nd last!

Knowing when to turn back

towards the summitSunday dawned pleasantly and Janet and I set off from the high carpark to walk into Coire an t-sneachda. The weather was deteriorating rapidly. After about an hour we decided to turn round along with 2 or 3 other groups who turned back at the same time, as it was clear conditions were worsening. There was nothing else for it - shopping and lunch in Aviemore. Sadly, we learnt the next day of the two climbers who had lost their lives on the same walk-out route.

Thanks Sam for another great weekend!

Bothy and bunkhouse trip are open to all members, old and new. They are not cliques and everyone is welcome. Accomodation varies from simple, communal sleeping platforms to cosy bedrooms with duvets. Most have hot showers, heating and good cooking facilities. Read the archives below to get a flavour of our weekend meets, then why not speak to Sam to see what he has booked for 2007?
