CLUB REPORTS

Onich Birthday/Anniversary Bash - Aug 2004

The August weekend meet to Onich was a big event - Mary Baird retired from teaching, Dave and Mary celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary and Lesley Cumming had a 'big 0' birthday. 34 club members arrived at Inchree bunkhouse on the Friday eve . . .

Saturday dawned fine and most folk headed for the hills. Our group ventured to the Mamores and after a long, pleasant walk 'bagged' the remotest, Sgurr Eilde Mor. Ben Nevis was the target for other club members and the Bairds reached the summit via the Carn Mor Dearg Arête.

Mamores lochsideEveryone had been invited to contribute to a buffet style meal and what a spead! Later the cakes, with re-igniting candles, were presented and Maureen Moss entertained us with tales of Dave and Mary from their courting days.

As the evening's merriment progressed, Jim and Alan accompanied us on moothie and spoons, in an ol' fashioned sing-a-long - well, ok, we knew all the first lines of the songs. . . Jim Watson stayed up long past his bedtime and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Sunday was another nice day but most people opted for a short stroll to the waterfall and gorge at Inchree before heading home.

Ardgour Busrun

Our trip to Ardgour on the 4 Sept if nothing else proved to me the diversity of our club members. We had walkers doing easy-ish walks on paths thro' to two doing the Aonach Eagach ridge! However most of the group used the short ferry crossing over to Ardgour from Corran to 'take on ' the several Corbetts in the area.

Ferns!I myself tackled Sgur nah-Eanchainne (being its Gaelic name) but its English translation should be 'the hill of the high ferns' due to fact that we had to force ourselves thro' ferns that were well over head height. A special mention for Sratton for doing most of the hard work - ta much. Not all of us in my group did top out however as 3 of us stayed at the back to help bring up the rear, only to lose the main group in the mist and being without a map forced us (sorry) them, back down at 600 m.

I believe that although everyone had a good day it was felt these hills were steeper and harder than expected but we are all still here to tell the tale. Our day ended as per tradition in a local hostelry where stories were swapped and lies told. Always a good way to end a day on the hills.
ROLL ON THE LAKES NEXT MONTH. . .

Strathaven Challenge

Janet & David Jamieson completed the 50 mile Round Strathaven Challenge on Sunday 5th September. Thanks to all club members who sponsored them - £40 was raised for The Children's Hospice Association and Strathaven Scouts and Guides.
