CLUB REPORTS

Puerto Pollensa - May 2005

Having over the last few years visited Kranska Gora, Andorra and Fuengirola, the doughty dozen decided to return to Puerto Pollensa, a resort that has everything – sun, sea and mountains. Before going on holiday, we appoint leaders for our main walks as a group and on our days off we do our own thing.

As usual, our first walk was over a pass to Cala san Vicente, a beautiful spot nestling between hills which plunge into the sea. Our next venture was an arduous circular walk from the delightfully named Ermita de la Victoria.

This walk had everything – a climb up a winding path ith sheer drops, then a long ridge walk with spectacular views to some lovely bays. The return through the pass of Fontalles was very challenging as the temperature soared. However, a nice cold beer and the usual jokesters, Angus MacDonald and Phil Collins soon had everyone in a jovial mood.

For our next walking day, some of the party, led by Bill Holland, decided on a gentle stroll beside the Cuber Lake, while the tigers, led by Jan Kilpatrick, tackled a tough walk, which involved going over a pass which rose to about 4000 feet, proving to be quite demanding - especially in the heat. The later part of the walk was wonderful as we wandered through a shady wood and enjoyed the best bird songs we have ever heard.

As there are no buses to this area on a Sunday, we had to take taxis. We had tremendous views over the sea cliffs and part way through our walk, we rested at the village of Cosconas where the houses are built into the natural caves in the mountainside. The sting in the tail was the steep climb to Lluc Monastery, where our walk finished.

Angus, Jan and Phil, the real tigers, decided on one more tough walk from near Lluc Monastery to the village of Caimari. This proved to be quite a challenge as it involved boulder hopping and difficult route finding.

On a lighter note, many of us walked to the old walled town of Alcudia, which is well worth a visit. Some of us enjoyed swimming, a wee refreshment and dancing. Once again we can look back on a most enjoyable trip, shared with good companions.

What more can you ask for?
